Stopping WordPress Spam This Season – Part 2

I wrote a few days ago that I was having some serious spam issues. Hundreds to thousands per day. I mentioned that I was going to try a few solutions, to see what worked. Well, I’ve only be experimenting for a couple of days now, but I’m definitely happy.

First off, I installed the Worst Offenders plugin done by Rich Boakes. You can read about it here and see a screen shot of what it does (see the release history and download here). This is absolutely one of my favorite plugins now. I absolutely love the fact that I can just quickly see obvious spam and delete it without having to scroll through pages of spam to make sure I’m not losing comments. Cheers to you for making this one!

Second, I installed Bad Behavior. I can only say – WOW. My spam message counts dropped drastically.

Between the two of them I’m getting 20 – 50 spam messages (instead of hundreds or thousands) and I can easily see which of them are the heavy spam and delete those, so in the end… I only end up looking at one or two. I am really quite thrilled. Not only that, but I haven’t gotten a -single- one comment waiting in moderation that is spam. The spam is all going to the right place again.

I’m so very thankful for the brilliant people who create plugins. 🙂

  1. Yep! I always use Akismet, but the problem was that too much was still getting through. I’ve had continued success since this article using a combination of Akismet, Worst Offenders, and Bad Behavior.
