Teleportation Experiments – A Step Closer

I think anyone who was (or is still) a Star Trek Trekkie (or called Trekker, depending on who you ask) is curious about teleportation in the real world. For those of us whom consider "Beam me up, Scotty" a household phrase, then it’s definitely something of interest to see it happening for real.

There have been experiments over the past years in which scientists are trying to get teleportation to work. There has been some progress (on a very small scale) and it is encouraging. Until now they could only teleport light or small objects.. never both. That has now changed.

From CNN via Reuters:

But Professor Eugene Polzik and his team at the Niels Bohr Institute at Copenhagen University in Denmark have made a breakthrough by using both light and matter.

"It is one step further because for the first time it involves teleportation between light and matter, two different objects. One is the carrier of information and the other one is the storage medium," Polzik explained in an interview on Wednesday.

Definitely progress! I’m extremely curious to see where we go from here. I have little doubt that eventually someone will figure out full complex object teleportation, but I also don’t count on seeing that for a very long time. There does seem to be one other thing that will really help progress this method they have used:

"Our method allows teleportation to be taken over longer distances because it involves light as the carrier of entanglement," he added.
